CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
Several young men stood outside Busterâs bar, some of them leaning on a picnic table a few feet from the front entrance. John guessed that most of them were summer people, here to visit their cabins, and out tonight looking for a good time. This was a young crowd: more than half were men, no parents with small children. A couple of them were smoking cigarettes, and most of them were loud, talking about cars, or girls, or their friends. When DeeDee and John approached the front door, the conversation stopped. John watched the eyes of the men, moving up and down DeeDeeâs long, thin legs and the impressive cleavage that she dressed to display. Her cotton T-shirt stopped about five inches short of her waist and exposed a fair amount of smooth, tan skin there. She had high cheekbones and large round eyes, and her dull brown hair was streaked with some blonde accents. Her jeans rode low on her hips and featured lots of silver buttons around the pockets. She wore too much eye makeup, which made her eyes look dark and sunken. She looked young and slutty, and everyone noticed her.
John reached around for the door handle and when he swung it open he made eye contact with the guy standing closest to the door. John stared into the other manâs eyes and sent the message that he was, in fact, with this girl. Heâd been in this situation a million times, with other men sizing up his date, or him. Heâd fought his way out of a few of these situations too. But tonight that seemed unlikely. These guys would say something after DeeDee and he had moved past them, for sure, but not until John and DeeDee were out of earshot and they could speak with no fear of insult or reproach.
A roar of loud music rushed past them as the door opened, and when it closed behind them John had to lean close to DeeDeeâs ear and then raise his voice to be heard. âLetâs go sit outside on the deck, overlooking the lake, so we can talk,â he said. He leaned so close to her ear that he could feel her hair tickling his lips when he spoke. He smelled her perfume, too, which he was fairly certain sheâd bought at a dime store.
âOK!â she hollered back at him.
They walked through the bar and John continued to watch the eyes of other men move up and down DeeDeeâs sexy form. The bartender, a longtime friend of Johnâs, greeted him with a nod and then a quick smile when he tossed a glance at DeeDee. John responded with a grin that said simply, âYup.â
As they reached the door that opened onto the deck and patio overlooking Wiigwaas Lake, a waitress brushed by John. Her name was Lori, she was in her early forties, and she knew John Velde quite well. Sheâd seen DeeDee first, and then John following behind her, and sheâd sized up the situation accurately in about one second.
